Introducing Your Puppy to Other Pets

Bringing a new puppy into a home where you already have a pet, whether it's a dog, cat, or another animal, requires a careful and patient approach. Your current pet is used to their routine and space, so introducing a new puppy should be done gradually to reduce stress and help both animals adjust. Here’s how to make the transition as smooth and positive as possible.

 1. Let your current pet get used to the puppy’s scent before they meet

  •  Before the puppy arrives, offer your pet a blanket or toy the puppy has used. This gives them a chance to get familiar with the new scent and makes the eventual meeting less of a shock. We are more than happy to provide a scent blanket on your first visit to meet your puppy which you can take home with you.

2. Keep the first introduction calm and controlled

  •  Choose a quiet, neutral space in your home, such as the garden or a hallway, where both animals can meet without feeling trapped or territorial. Keep your puppy on a lead, and allow your pet to approach when they’re ready, without forcing contact.

3. Start with short, positive sessions

  •  Keep the initial interactions brief, allowing both pets to observe and sniff each other while you stay relaxed and reassuring. Praise both animals for calm behaviour, and gently separate them after a few minutes so they don't become overwhelmed.

4. Supervise all early interactions inside the home

  •  Even if things seem to be going well, never leave your puppy and existing pet alone together in the beginning. Supervision ensures you can intervene quickly if play becomes too rough or if either animal shows signs of stress or discomfort.

5. Give your resident pet space and reassurance

  •  Make sure your existing pet has places where they can escape or take a break from the puppy. Continue their usual routine with walks, feeding, and affection so they don't feel neglected or replaced.

6. Manage puppy behaviour around cats and small pets

  •  If you have a cat, keep the puppy on a lead and prevent chasing. Allow the cat to observe from a safe height or separate room. For small pets like rabbits or guinea pigs, always supervise and keep interactions calm and at a distance.

7. Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behaviour

  • Reward both pets with treats and praise when they behave calmly around each other. This helps them associate each other with good things and reinforces the behaviour you want to see.

8. Be patient—relationships take time to grow

  • Some pets warm to each other quickly, while others may take several weeks or longer. Respect their pace, keep things positive, and with time, your new puppy will become a welcomed part of the family.
